Matt Swick is a costume technician and designer from Warsaw, IN. He developed his love of costuming through cosplay and it continues to be a large part of his life. He enjoys historical costuming as well as fantasy costuming. Matt has worked on several different Ball State productions including The Gift, House of Bernarda Alba, The Giantmaker, and Pericles: Prince of Tyre

Why do you do theatre?

I've always been in love with the arts. When I was younger I planned to pursue a career in music. During the last few years of high school I discovered my love of costuming and cosplay. Sewing became a creative outlet for me. In college I fell in love with theatre itself. It became a safe space for me to be myself and make long-lasting connections with the people around me. Theatre is my creative outlet, a place for me to let loose. Theatre also has the ability to change the world, and I think its an asset for us to use.

Where do you want your career to go?

I've always jokingly said that if I could spend the rest of my life behind a sewing machine that I would be a happy camper. I don't necessarily think this is a joke though. I absolutely love costume construction and I would be my happiest in a costume shop building costumes. I couldn't see myself doing anything else in life.

What are your interests outside of theatre?

I have quite a few interests outside of theatre. My main interest is cosplay, which I have been doing since 2015. I often create and build my own costumes which help to further my ability in theatre. I often attend comic and anime conventions where I love to compete in cosplay competitions. I've won a few awards based on design and construction in these competitions including a Best in Show award and a Hall Costume Contest award. Along with these competitions I enjoy hosting various panels on cosplay and about the shows I cosplay from. I also love to perform in cosplay, whether it be dancing or various skits and routines. I love to promote body positivity and inclusion in cosplay. Along with cosplay I also dabble in the drag scene. I enjoy doing makeup and hope to perform once the pandemic is over.
