Nick is a lighting designer and technician from Centerville, IN. His areas of expertise are programming on EOS based consoles; managing groups of people in load ins and outs; creating paperwork and renderings via Photoshop, Excel, Vectorworks, and Lightwright; and managing lighting equipment during the run of shows. His plan after graduation is to go into architectural lighting design in a large city. He has experience working in multiple venues outside of Ball State including University of Virginia and Interlochen Center of the Arts.

Design Philosophy

"Less is only more when more is no good" (Frank Lloyd Wright). I have always approached my design concepts and ideas by making sure each element I incorporate into them is meaningful and has its purpose. I strive to have a design full of importance and not one that just looks good. I have always enjoyed Frank Lloyd Wright's designs and was inspired by this quote once reading it because I have had the same mentality towards design before finding it.

Interests Outside of Lighting

Outside of lighting design, I still like being creative and using my hands to create things. One hobby and passion I gained during the COVID quarantine is cooking. I have been able to learn how to bake several different desserts and breads as well as cook many different vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes. Another passion I gained was nature appreciation and going outside in order to find out how light works in a natural setting outside of the building. Lastly, I really enjoy being able to build models of different things and LEGO is one of my favorite pass times when trying to develop a physical idea before putting it into a rendering or anything specific.

Community Engagement

Before coming to college, I did a lot of volunteer work at my local civic theater helping with their youth theater program. I have always been a strong supporter of good arts programs for teens and young adults because of those being my interests growing up. Outside of community theater, I worked as an electrician at Interlochen Center for the Arts and was able to gain mentoring experience when working with several high school students. Along with that experience, I have been an upperclassmen mentor for two years at Ball State  for incoming freshman and sophomores in the lighting shop.
